Siarnaq Studies: Dynasty’s second chance

Hello reader, and welcome to another article of “Siarnaq Studies” a series where I seek to analyse justify and most importantly share my opinion on various topics related to the competitive scene. This includes all of tier 1, 2 and also just the overwatch competitive experience.

Each article will begin with a thesis, that I try and defend.

Oh, and if you're still struggling to pronounce my name its Siarnaq (sigh-r-nack) anyway let’s get into the bold statement

If Seoul is good, Jecse will be the main reason.

The Seoul Dynasty last season felt like the Rockets without Chris Paul or this seasons Lakers, they had their star in Fleta but no one to pair with him.

In the overwatch league, especially this year, you need more than 1 all-star to be able to compete.

Thinking about it last year, Profit had Gesture and Fury, Jjonak had the entire NY roster, Philly started to get really good with the emergence of EQO as did the Valiant with Space and Fate. Seoul however only had Fleta, and a decent supporting cast but that was not enough.

Enter Jecse, formerly of element mystic and now Seoul’s new main support. I stated in my previous article on the charge that it's no coincidence that great teams have great supports which I believe Seoul now have in Jecse. Element Mystic emerged after the mass exodus of teams like Busan and Kongdoo 1.0 to pursue the overwatch league and quickly became one of the front-runners alongside runaway. One of the main reasons for this was Jecse. It was obvious watching element mystic that they benefited hugely from having a reliable shot caller and honestly overall one of the better main supports in contenders.

Seoul lacked leadership last season, in game and out of it. I think Esca’s departure was more influential than some think, whilst not the best player, he was their leader much like Sbb is for the new york roster. Taking into account the flurry of coaches who will have all had their own ways of thinking its reasonable to say they lacked an identity. They now have found a potential leader in Jecse who also is an upgrade over the injury-prone Tobi mechanically regardless of his leadership capabilities. Whilst being solidly upper tier on Lucio Ana and Mercy, Jecse’s biggest asset is his in-game calling.

My thought process is this, after seeing what he was able to get out of players like Pokpo, Rapel, Daco, Xzi and Sparkle surely the ceiling with players like Zunba, Fissure, Fleta and Jehong is much higher. Okay yes, how well Jecse can stamp himself on these players and get them to listen is a question, Seoul as individuals are much more accomplished than his former teammates on EM so egos may need to be checked. But if it works…. It will work wonderfully.

Alongside Jecse another addition into the starting lineup is Fissure coming from the gladiators to solve their need of a top quality main tank, comfortable on both Reinhardt and Winston Fissure will be an interesting fit into Seoul as his playstyle is very resource heavy. For anyone unaware that simply means he requires a lot of attention and focus on him in order to succeed, the team must play around him. It will be interesting to see how both of these vocal players interact in the same team, however, someone like Fissure should adore playing in the same team as Jecse. Last season it was proven the young main tank was very much the leader doing all the calling and really trying to raise the level of his team, he was doing this on his own. So if Fissure can set his own ambitions to be the alpha aside, there shouldn't be a situation where he burns out and throws a tantrum just before their first playoffs game. In the simplest terms fissure no longer has to take the strain of being that vocal leader and can focus on being the best mechanical player whilst enabling as oppose to trying to hard carry.

So not only does Jecse help give the dynasty clear direction in game, but this could possibly even cause a higher peak in Fissure’s game, even higher than we have seen what he can do with the likes of Birdring Profit and Fury. Time will tell if fissure is capable of being a follower, not a leader.

To conclude in a few months time people may end up calling Jecse the most underrated and under hyped move of the off season. Seoul will be interesting to watch that is for certain
