Introduction to the OWL 2019 play-in Teams: Who will make it to the playoffs?

Updated: Mar 30, 2020

Hello everyone! After being away for almost half a year i have returned to writing and with that want to introduce you guys to the six teams competing in the OWL 2019 play-in tournament. This article will Introduce each team shortly and make a prediction for which team will go out and which teams will make it into the official Overwatch League 2019 playoffs. I hope you guys enjoy this quick piece right before the exciting end of the Overwatch League 2019 season!

Ryu ''ryujehong'' Je-hong, Flex-support for the Seoul Dynasty

Seoul Dynasty

The Dynasty have had an up and down season, with a lot of really good showings but also showcasing a regular amount of mediocrity. Finishing with a 15-13 record is enough to make the play-ins but the powerhouse from Seoul were expected by most people to finish in the top 6 this year. With a new meta on the horizon and a roster that finally seem to find a regular rotation in substitutes anything can happen can happen for this all Korean side. Michelle seems to be there key player. We will go to the Sigma patch and he has shown to be a very flexible off-tank which has been a big help for his team during the regular season.

London Spitfire

It is weird to me to have to cover the Spitfire in an article like this. Before the season started i predicted them to be consistently top 3 in the league and making it to playoffs with ease. Unfortunately, i heavily underestimated their ability to be super inconsistent. London Spitfire has shown as always to have the talent to win the league but for some reason it just does not come out on a consistent level which is a true shame for their fans. For these play-ins on the other hand, London is a very loose canon. We have experienced last year the reigning Overwatch League champions can turn it up out of nowhere and walk over every opponent they face. Which side of the Spitfire will we see? According to rumors first revealed on the ''Plat Chat'' podcast the London Spitfire are on fire in scrims and are seen as one of the most dangerous teams going into the final stage of the league.

Shanghai Dragons

Oh how hard a team can fall... the Dragons, our stage 3 champions only managed to win a singular game in 2/2/2 and looked as one of the worst teams during stage 4. Now with a new patch coming along and the Dragons still struggling to adapt to the role lock it is hard to imagine a world where they make it through the play-in tournament. Shanghai fans need to hope for a miracle here or else their run might end very early against the Fusion.

Philadelphia Fusion

Another year of Philly not being able to establish themselves as a top team in the league. Last years finalists had a hard time looking for consistency not unlike their opponents in that final, the London Spitfire. Going 3-4 in stage 4, Fusion does not look like a dominant force that can beat a lot of the other teams in the bracket. Carpe and EQO have looked very uncoordinated in the new meta with an always unpredictable Sado being either very mediocre or just kinda solid summoning up Fusions' season. It would be a great upset if this team were to reach the grand finals again.

Guangzhou Charge

Right of the bet: Guangzhou Charge is probably the strongest team at the moment in this bracket based on recent performances. Having a 2/2/2 record of 6-1 their only loss was in a close game against the London Spitfire. Charge have shown to be able to shine in role lock with Nero and Hotba leading the ''Charge''. If any team is a true dark horse for a big upset it would be Guangzhou. Their first opponent will be another Chinese team in the Chengdu Hunters which already promises to be a very exciting match-up where the Charge is expected to win. One would be a fool though to underestimate the wacky plays of Chengdu.

Chengdu Hunters

The final team on this list, the team that arguably brought the most fun to the league with their fun compositions, great personalities and being an actual pretty good full Chinese team. The Hunters look to defend the honor of their region by doing well in the post season, which will be a very big mountain to climb for them. Chengdu is unpredictable but it is hard to think of a scenario where they make it far in playoffs. Especially now that their first opponent is the in form Guangzhou Charge. Jinmu and the squad really need to step up their game to challenge the Charge. Let us all hope for one last glorious ride with the yottachad Ameng and the always cheery Yveltal carrying their team to something special!

Now for my own prediction on who will make it through this bracket to the final 8:

- London Spitfire

- Guangzhou Charge

These teams have shown recently to be the strongest out of the 6 teams in this bracket and are a great addition to the official playoffs.

Thanks for reading everybody! i might be a bit rusty on the writing but i am enjoying doing it again nonetheless. Let me know who you think will make it through the bracket!
