Today, 17 days before the start of the next season of the Overwatch League, I thought it a good idea to highlight a couple of players that might fly under many peoples radars going into the 2nd season of the Overwatch League. We will be assembling a roster of 6 players (who are all new to the league), 2 from each major role and look at what makes them special. Also i choose to only pick one player per team, to make it a bit more interesting.
Main DPS: YangXiaoLong – Chengdu Hunters
Unfortunately we have to start this of with a player we might not see for a couple of weeks. Due to VISA Issues, YXL’s arrival in Los Angeles will be delayed and the chances of seeing him in opening week are very small. When he finally fights his way to the starting roster you will all be amazed by his insane mechanics. Chengdu will most likely use him as a Hitscan specialist, in the way NYXL used Pine last season. YangXiaoLong has been out of the pro scene for over a year now with a match on December 5th 2017 being his last appearance whilst playing for the at-the-time best team in China, Miraculous Youngster. His hero-pool included mainly McCree, Soldier 76, Reaper & Tracer. Mainly famous for his stellar hitscan mechanics on these heroes he was feared as one of the scariest DPS to play against at the time alongside his partner leave, who we have recently seen in the Chinese World Cup run were they finished 2nd. The reason i believe YXL will get his form back is mainly based on the roll he plays & the performance leave showed us at the World Cup. Hitscan DPS is very mechanically focused and YXL has proven to be S-tier on his signature heroes when in form. Leave showed us at the World Cup that being away from pro play for a long time does not have to mean a decay in the players skill level. I look forward to what YangXiaoLong will show us in OWL Season 2.
Flex DPS: SeoMinSoo – Vancouver Titans
SeoMinSoo really made a name for himself over the past year, being in a DPS rotation with Haksal and Stitch he hold his own against RunAway’s famous duo. Mostly known for his Zarya and projectile DPS SMS has a strange hero pool that fits his team really well. If you are unsure about his clutch-factor or individual skill I urge you to watch the Contenders 2018 Season 2 finals were he was the MVP on the maps he played. SeoMinSoo will probably see the most playtime on maps were Zarya triple tank is generally strong but with options for him to swap to a Hanzo or Pharah. It will be interesting to see how the Titans will make use of him in their rotation going into the new patch, if it’s anything like the last time we saw this team play under the RunAway banners SeoMinSoo will see a decent amount of playtime.
Off Tank: rCk – Dallas Fuel
Another Finnish face at the top of pro-Overwatch, rCk was one of the best off tanks coming out of Contenders last year. By walking the path of the Finish Overwatch scene (ENCE Esports -> Gigantti -> OWL) he joins his fellow countryman Taimou on the Dallas Fuel. RCk was famous in EU Contenders for his amazing grav+bomb combo’s which he always perfectly executed and sparked the term ‘'GiganttiBomb’' that is still heavily used in EU Contenders casts and analysis. Besides those flashy plays, rCk was always highly regarded as a solid D.VA player who is able to flex to different tanks when needed.
Main Tank: Rio – Guangzhou Charge
When you think of top Korean Main Tanks, Rio might not be the first name to come to mind, or even the second or third... Even though he played for the Meta Gaming organisation for over a year. Now, he finally gets his shot at proving his worth in OWL. Rio is an overall solid MT who placed top 4 two consecutive times in Korean Contenders with Meta Bellum. His Winston is very strong and if the show match vs the Seoul Dynasty was anything to go of, his Reinhardt got a lot better. Guangzhou only has one Main Tank on their roster so their will be a lot asked of Rio, i believe that with his experience and synergy with his previous teammates from Bellum (from which a total of 4 went to the Charge) he will prove to be a Rock for his team.
Main Support: Kruise – Paris Eternal
When their is an all EU team joining the league, i feel obliged to put one of their Rookie players on this list. Kruise has been around in the pro-Overwatch scene for what seems like an eternity. He found success on different team from which his last one was Toronto Esports in NA Contenders. Kruise has a very good Lucio, mostly known for his sometimes aggressive positioning and next to this he is also a top tier mercy player. In my opinion he rivals Neptuno already for the title of best European Main Support. In game, Kruise is a heavy shot-caller and has a big brain for strategy & ult economy which paired with excellent ult usage makes him a very valuable player to have on your team. When GOATS stays meta, Paris will be a very scary team to play against especially with this Brit on Main Support.
Flex Support: Revenge – Hangzhou Spark
Revenge is just an absolute fragger, being able to put out massive damage from his Zenyatta he rivaled Viol2t & Twilight for the title of best Zenyatta player in Korean Contenders last year. Seeing him go to the Spark brings me joy because now he can show his skills on the main stage of pro-Overwatch. The Spark has done very well with their pickups, besides Revenge they also picked up his Coach on SEVEN which will help him integrate in a new environment. Revenge is a mechanically very gifted player that knows exactly were to put his damage and when to press Q for the trance, I won’t be surprised if he will be in the conversation of candidates that can rival Jjonak for best Flex Support in the league next season.
Now... these are just 6 players, there are a lot more Rookies that might become the revelation of the season and surprise everyone! We can only wait and see...
